PHOTO ART BY SUSAN WILLIAMS
I've always loved art and have been in awe of people who create it. As an English major at Portland State University (BA, 1985), I marveled at how a poet could put words together in a brand new sequence that no one ever used before. Great art stays with us and leaves an indelible imprint; a lasting image.
When I first started traveling , I considered becoming a travel writer. I wanted to record my experiences - especially the unexpected beauty of each new place. And then I fell in love with digital photography. Now I use the photographs to record my travel memories.
As a photographer, I "see" things differently than I used to. Even when I don't have my camera with me, I notice colors, textures and other unexpected things that capture my attention. Things I used to overlook - the shadows in a passageway; ripples of water in a fountain; colorful rounds of cheese in a market stall - can be captured as lovely, lasting images. For me, it's just a new kind of poetry.
