Artist Statement

I have always had an attraction to the many various art forms and I consider myself an artistic individual. Throughout the years I have worked with pottery, jewelry making, stained glass, quilting, wood working and collage art. However, it was not until after retirement that I began to seriously explore different methods of creating art through painting.
I began taking classes at the local community college and attended several workshops. When I finally discovered watercolor painting, it felt like I had arrived home.
I have been painting with watercolors for five years. I enjoy experimenting with different mediums and will often incorporate them into my art pieces. I may use salt, Kleenex pours, saran wrap, Indian ink, colored pencils, gold leafing or stamping images into my paintings. These additional tools add depth, texture, interest and mystery to the work.
I receive a great deal of satisfaction when I paint. What I love most about painting is the possibility of birthing the essence of my subject matter onto a piece of watercolor paper, be it a person, animal, plant, landscape or still life. Art is a gift to me and I want to share with others what I have created from my heart.
The following mixed media, batik and watercolor paintings were created by Pat Laird.
